There are many options, but the list below qualifies as Primary Care Physicians:

  • Family Medicine or General Practice: General practitioners treat a wide range of medical problems in all ages. Family practitioners are similar to general practitioners, but have extra training to care for all family members, young and old.
  • Internal Medicine: Internists are physicians for adults. Some internists take additional training to become specialists. For example, a neurologist is an internist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of brain, spinal cord, and nervous system diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, headaches, stroke, or injury.
  • Pediatrics: Pediatricians specialize in the care of children.
  • Geriatrics: Geriatricians are trained in family practice or internal medicine and have additional training for older adults.

It’s important to choose a physician that fits your health care needs. If you have a specific health concern, look for a physician who specializes in that area (e.g. heart disease, women's health issues, lung problems).

Your primary care physician coordinates the following care:

  • If you need a referral to a specialist.
  • If you need a referral to be admitted to a hospital.
Disclaimer: For Managed Care plans you may need a referral from a Primary Care Physician.
